Poem

Daughter’s voice on dowry system

Suzan Dalia, David Rudder, Trista Signe Ainsworth

Sahil Patel, Hamsalekha, Ali

O dear father, o beloved, friend,
Listen o my mother,
I am not a burden on anyone’s head,
Nor is my boat in the midstream..
I’ll be the oar, I’ll fight the waves (against us),
How can money sell me,
O, how could money ever sell me..

Yesterday I was walking holding the father’s finger,
Tomorrow I’ll become his walking stick too..
O mother I am the bird of your nest,
I’ll come back home with grain only..

In whose nature there is no curiosity*
who didn’t like me more than he liked money,
I don’t need such a partner..
Listen, this is the time to say no..
I’ll walk alone, I’ll meet the fate,
How can money sell me!

The wires of hearts weren’t attached,
then why waste money on a couple of customs?
We weave relations, willing for love..
Why should we bear greed for a couple of such relations..
Is there
